Nottingham Fashion Week: Headcase Headwear Interview

Welcome back!

As mentioned in a previous post, I'll be working as part of the team running Nottingham Fashion Week , specifically for the Spotlight on Independent Fashion Showcase. All of this excitement is due to the collaboration between Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID) and The Creative Quarter.

I recently interviewed Clare Leavy, the lady behind the exceptionally kitsch, humorous and bright brand 'Headcase Headwear'. Clare is a person who thrives from being different. If she had a spirit animal she feels it would have to be a flamingo due to their stand out feathers.

'Headcase Headwear' blossomed as a result of Clare's love for festivals. She became so fed up of not seeing items of clothing or accessories that she liked so she began creating headpieces for a bit of a laugh. It wasn't until her daughter told her she should seriously have a go at turning it into something bigger that she thought "Why not?"

This is a question we should all ask ourselves more, it's always a better idea to try things out. After all, the worst that can happen is you decide whatever it is isn't for you.

When asked for her views on the fashion scene here in Nottingham, Clare's passion became most apparent.

"There's a really brilliant street style vibe here which I love and am always inspired by."

Clare's other inspirations for her work include youth culture, big personalities and music.

"Basically anyone in life who doesn't take themselves too seriously!"

Her current favourite head piece is a recent one she created for Nottingham Light Night which took place in February this year. Her love for bigger pieces has spurred her on to make them a key focus in the future.

One response I particularly loved from Clare came when I asked her who she would most like to see wearing her work. Most people's default response would be an A-List celebrity due to the undeniable exposure they would give. Clare didn't feel this way at all

"I'm not necessarily interested in famous people wearing my pieces. If a person has their own sense of style and likes to mix things up a bit, then they're the perfect representative for HH"

Everybody hates the question "Where do you see yourself in 10 years", so like any other human being there was an initial panic in Clare's voice. However, when her mind was eased, her response was perfect. All she wants to do is carry on growing HH, make herself happy and truly believe in what she's producing.

"Of course money is needed but it's not at the forefront of what I do. I now have a creative outlet that I didn't realise was there before."

When asked for any advice she has for aspiring designers who are looking to start their own brand, her response was succinct and straight to the point.

"Do what makes you happy and what feels right, live and learn, don't be so hard on yourself!"

I really encourage you all to attend the Spotlight on Independent Fashion Showcase! Please give Clare's unit a visit!
She can't wait to have some fun, meet new people and spread the love.
